"I wish I could show you, when you are lonely or in the darkness, the astonishing light of your own being!" - Hafez
Welcome to balthazar & rose!
balthazar & rose was born of inspiration from travel to my husband's country, Tunisia, and from a love of simple gifts from other cultures that fit effortlessly and purposefully into the California lifestyle. One such gift was the Fouta and more recently, the addition of our Savon d'Alep (Aleppo Soap).
Our towels and soaps are a match made in heaven. Both are wise, ancient traditions that come to the modern world with thoughtfulness, purpose and meaning. Both are of superb quality and haute de gamme products in their respective worlds. We are so proud to bring these treasures to the United States and to share their special stories, the lives they touch, and not to mention their incredible beauty, simplicity and usefulness.
Aside from helping in our own small way to support the economy of newly democratic and fragile Tunisia (and the Winner of the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize), it is our honor to also engage with our local community in the packaging of our soaps. Our ultimate goal? To one day build an earthen factory for our artisans, and to be able to hire more people in life who need a second chance and a fresh start. Please stay tuned!

Mission Statement: Balthazar & Rose is a social enterprise that strives to bring beautiful, simple, useful gifts from the East to the West. Our mission is to make a positive impact by bridging cultural divides with products that are socially responsible and embody powerful significance: working directly with artisans, protecting the cultural heritage of ancient products and providing economic opportunity for people on the margins of society.
Coming full circle:
Up to $500 of profits (and we hope to grow this soon!) from our Fouta & Peshtemal sales annually will go to Kiva. Headquartered in California, Kiva is a highly reputable non-profit organization that gives 0% interest microloans. "By lending as little as $25 on Kiva, anyone can help a borrower start or grow a business, go to school, access clean energy or realize their potential. For some, it’s a matter of survival, for others it’s the fuel for a life-long ambition." We later became a Kiva borrower ourselves (!) as we needed capital to grow and are currently paying in our 3rd and final year of paying back a $10,000 0% micro-loan.
5% of wholesale & 10% of retail sales from our Aleppo Soap will be donated to The Jesuit Refugee Service. The mission of JRS is to "accompany, serve, and advocate for the rights of refugees and all forcibly displaced persons".
As a Los Angeles based social enterprise, we are proud to engage Homeboy Industries in our soap packaging. Homeboy Industries is an inspirational social enterprise about second chances.
What's in a name? We've gotten a lot of questions about our name. balthazar & rose, for us, evokes the notion of beautiful gifts from afar, brought with thoughtfulness and purpose. It is both highly masculine and highly feminine, both rugged and refined. It has great meaning to us as it encompasses our backgrounds, intertwined: European, Mediterranean, African, Near Eastern. Above all, it is the name of our children.
